LOCAL: It’s time to expand the idea “buy local” to everything – from countertops to toys. Washington CEO magazine calls this the New Localism. When products are made in your community, you can better know the producer and how the goods are made. When you buy locally made products, your money stays in the community, supporting locally owned businesses, workers and, through “the multiplier effect”, many more jobs than when you buy imported goods. That's particularly important to our country's economic recovery. Read more about the movement in the NEWS and our BLOG. Companies that qualify to be in the directory and display the local.green.goods. badge meet these qualifications.

No Greenwashing here! “Green” is the new buzzword – but the U.S. still has a long way to go to lessen our impact on the world. Ecobly companies use mostly reclaimed, recycled or sustainably harvested materials, sourced close by. You can trust the Ecobly logo to help sort through questionable marketing claims you may encounter when looking for “green goods.” Be assured you are getting the real deal.

“SLOW SHOPPING”: Like Slow Food, where the focus is on quality and preparation, Slow Shopping focuses on how goods are created. Fill your home with things that were made by craftsmen and women who share your values, not churned out of some far-flung assembly line. Not sure what’s greenest? We’ve done the research for you! You care about the earth. You want to reduce your carbon footprint. Ecobly is for you! High-quality, green imported goods do exist – but we can enjoy the economic benefits and reduced carbon footprint of making them, and buying them, right here at home!

GREEN BUSINESSES: Here at home we have tons of “raw materials” at our fingertips, namely, our garbage (we only recycle about 30% of our garbage.) As recycling programs expand, more businesses can to turn trash to treasure. Being sustainable is the “third bottom line” for many companies, and consumers seek it. The Ecobly directory connects businesses to find green raw materials and supplies while ensuring the high quality of their goods. As demand for Ecobly products rises, more entrepreneurs will find ever-creative ways to turn our cast-offs into our necessities.

FOR YOUR CHILDREN'S HEALTH AND SAFETY: Millions of imported toys and children’s products are recalled every year because of safety issues. Some are built cheaply and fall apart, others contain poisonous coatings. Ecobly products are made without toxics, and by shopping locally, you are more likely to find high-quality furniture and toys. For the most part, U.S. laws are more stringent than those abroad and, with a company doing business in your backyard, they are more likely to be accountable to their customers.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS
Kathleen RidhalghKathleen Ridihalgh
Kathleen has been involved in the environmental field since 1994. While writing a green parenting blog, she became interested in finding products made locally for her family. It was frustrating to try to find goods made in Washington that were green. Socks? Toys? It was hard, and the Ecobly idea — to make it easy to find good stuff — was born!
